Blackhouse
Simplicity as a starting point
At first glance, Blackhouse appears inspired by a child’s drawing: a simple form, a steep pitched roof, placed straight in the landscape. But the apparent simplicity is deliberate. The prefab timber-frame house is clad in shou sugi ban — charred wood that weathers robustly and dissolves into the North Holland surroundings. Inside, an open floor plan with a void defines the atmosphere: light from all sides, sightlines drawing the garden inward. Private spaces are located on the upper floor. The outbuilding functions as a studio or workspace. JEB architecten designed Blackhouse as a sustainable detached family home — built for the long term.
